Lecture Series » Mike O'Meara - HMS Edinburgh's Gold
4th February, 19:00 - 21:00
HMS Edinburgh's gold refers to the five tons of gold bullion (payment for war supplies) that light cruiser HMS Edinburgh sank with in the Arctic in 1942, leading to the legendary "Salvage of the Century" in the 1980s, where most of the treasure was recovered from the deep seabed, setting deep-sea diving records. The gold, originally from Russia, was intended as payment for Allied war materials, but the ship was torpedoed on its return journey.
