Lecture Series » Lecture - Dr Noel Stimson / The Titanic Captain, the real story.
We all know the story of the RMS Titanic and how Captain Smith was blamed for the disaster by the New York and London inquiries as a result of allegedly ignoring the numerous ice warnings and driving his ship at an excessive speed into an iceberg, resulting in the loss of over 1500 lives.
But Was Smith a maniac or a luckless scapegoat? How well does the Titanic story stand up to modern scrutiny? How would Smith have told his story if he had survived the sinking? This presentation puts the spotlight on these questions and on what is now believed to be the real Captain Smith as opposed to the man portrayed so unfavourably by the inquiries, the press and the many major movies of the disaster.
